If you are using a Mac, keep reading…
Blackboard Browser is a client for accessing the Edmonds School District’s Blackboard server. Normally, you access Blackboard through your internet browser, whether it be Safari, Firefox, or (God forbid) Internet Explorer. But, if you’re like most people you also have a bunch of other things open in your browser in multiple tabs or windows. This is a problem, however, as it makes switching to Blackboard, which you probably have open all day and may access dozens of times, much more difficult. Basically, Blackboard is an application just like iTunes or Word but it just happens to be web-based. By being web-based, it loses many of the benefits that standalone applications have, such as:
- An icon in the dock to click on
- The ability to make a shortcut to it on your desktop
- The ability to use the application switcher (hold down the Apple button and push tab if you don’t know what that is)
Enter Blackboard Browser. Blackboard Browser is a small but effective program that addresses those problems. It is based on WebKit, the guts of Safari, so it looks and acts like Safari, but without any of the buttons or bars that aren’t needed when you’re only dealing with one program. It has its own nice icon to make it easily identifiable in the dock or application switcher. And, for anyone that wants to play around with learning how to program for the Mac, the program is open source.
You can download the program here (zip archive – 48k) or the program with source code here (zip archive – 184k).
It is a universal binary, so should run on PowerPC Macs (the iBook, for example) or the new Intel Macs (MacBook, etc.)
Please, please provide any feedback, including problems, feature requests, etc. I will be posting further articles and instructions, and giving Blackboard Browser its own section on my website, in the next day or two.
Finally, some credit. The idea for small, sleek client programs like this came from Michael McCracken and his client for gMail called Webmail.app. My project is then based on Chip Cuccio’s gCal code.
